PHILADELPHIA, PA – November 22, 2010 – The holiday season kicked off early last Saturday at Cozen PAL, when the Barristers’ Association of Philadelphia hosted their Annual Turkey Drive. This important event ensured that over 500 families in the Francisville section of Philadelphia will be able to gather around the table on Thanksgiving and enjoy a full and delicious meal.
For the past five years, The Barristers’ Association of Philadelphia has been hosting their Annual Turkey Drive at Cozen PAL, where they package “Turkey Baskets” (each basket includes a 10-15 lb. turkey, canned vegetables, stuffing and cornbread or rolls) for deserving families in the local community. Scott Reid, Esq., of Cozen O’Connor, chairperson of the Turkey Drive and former Barristers’ Association of Philadelphia President, said, “Thanksgiving is a holiday that was built around the idea of unity and community. Each year during the holiday season we are provided with an opportunity to be thankful for our lives, what we have and our families and friends. It’s also important to remember those who are less fortunate than us and to give back to the local community.”
Families of all different sizes were pouring into Cozen PAL on Saturday, thankful for what they were being given and for the opportunity to celebrate Thanksgiving on Thursday. Ruth Jones, a Francisville community member and “Turkey Basket” recipient came to pick her basket up with her granddaughter. When asked what this turkey drive meant to her family, Ruth said, “This is a blessing for my family. We’re so thankful because we can celebrate Thanksgiving now.” Jones also noted that having a PAL center nearby her home was “wonderful for the local community.”
Along with families, local churches and organizations came to pick up baskets to distribute to their members in need of some help this holiday. Patricia Terrell and Joseph Blakeney Jr. from Women’s Christian Academy noted, “This means a lot to our community. We deal with a lot of families in foster care and we’re able to help these children and families have a good holiday.” Overall, everyone that stepped into Cozen PAL had smiles on their faces. Thanks to the generosity of these local lawyers, the holidays spirit will be alive and well throughout the season!
