PHILADELPHIA, PA – November 18, 2010 – PAL’s 2010 Chess Program, which was made possible through the generosity of the H. Chase and Ana Maria Lenfest Foundation, came to a close on November 17, 2010. After weeks of grueling chess matches at all 26 PAL centers, 180 youngsters competed in a hard fought Regional Championship battle on November 11. Only a select few earned the chance to move on to the finals.
Last night at the Lenfest PAL Center, 32 finalists competed in the citywide Chess Finals. Each of the age groups; 18 and under, 16 and under, 14 and under and 12 and under, were represented by the best of the best in the City of Philadelphia. Although a very diverse group from all different parts of the city, these finalists were united in their avid love for the game of chess. Participants enjoyed highly intense matches, pizza, snacks, juice and the company of fellow chess players.
Presenting sponsor Chase Lenfest, who was very active throughout the entire program, reminded children that often times in life, it is best to think before you act, relating this valuable life lesson back to the game of chess. Lenfest has been the sole sponsor of the PAL Chess Program for more than 10 years, and has been instrumental in the development of hundreds of PAL chess experts over the past decade! He has become a friend, mentor and teacher to countless participants.
Aside from teaching values and keeping youth in organized, safe programming after school, the Lenfest Chess Program, like many of PAL’s programs, broadens the horizons of inner-city youth and allows them to have experiences they may not have access to otherwise. Congratulations go out to PAL’s 2010 Chess Program winners: Kyreem, Toni, Jacqueline and Khalil.
